Reusable and Eco Friendly Menstrual Pads?

*images via Naturally Hip

I recently have been in a desperate search for the best cloth diaper. No I am not referring to the safety pin, hang on the line and dry kind. I am talking about the very innovative ones that have flooded the market in recent years. One of my twitter folks hipped me on to them a few weeks ago and I have been on the hunt since that day. There are so many brands, but I am slowly working my way through each review and will gladly share my findings with all of you soon. But, alas this post is not about cloth diapers. It is about a discovery I made while searching for them: Cloth Pads!

As I began researching many of the diaper companies I found that many of them also make “Aunt Flo” stuff. I remember the my mother telling me about cloth pads when she was a girl and how they had to be strapped to you with a belt, but I had no idea that people were still doing this. Call me dumb or just slow, but it seriously threw me for a loop. I am a tampon girl so I rarely wear a regular pad – let alone one that I have to wash!!! I am an open minded individual when it comes to most stuff, but this may be sretching it even for me. I can see Chris now when its his turn to do laundry,

Um, Hon, what is this?

What is what?

This?!?(pointing to the laundry basket)

Oh those are just my used pads.

What?

From my period.

Why are they in the laundry and not the trash?!?

Silly boy…you are supposed to wash those.

Huh??????

You can just put them on gentle with the Woolite. You may need to pre-soak with a stain fighter. Thanks Babe!

Of course I would never let him see them, but its funny to think about. There is also a plastic cup thing you can buy to catch your period…which I guess is the reusable equivalent of a tampon. Yeah…I’m thinking this may be too far up my league.

Despite my initial shock and awe I am still very curious about this whole thing. Some of the pads are actualy quite pretty especially the Naturally Hip ones. She makes them look like an actual fashion accessory.  So I still might order them and do a review, but on the other hand I also do not want to give aid and comfort to the enemy (Aunt Flo) since pregnancy is my focus. Anyways…I thought I would share some of my findings with you. Let me know if you have tried any of these or plan to.

LOL. . . . . wow. I have been looking into cloth diapers as well (or any other eco friendly(ier) diapering alternative, but I’m going to have to stick with my always ultra trim infinity pads, LOL.

I’m a ‘green’ mommy and have been cloth diapering my son for almost a year now. Like you, I wondered what was the best cloth diaper out there. Unfortunately, the information you find on cloth diapering isn’t that easy to understand or helpful. My quest led me to develop my own business and website. I invite you to check it out and let me know what you think – http://www.pootersdiapers.com.

The Pooters brand is all about simplicity. Simple cloth diapers and simple cloth diapering information. My website provides the most comprehensive and easy to understand cloth diapering info on the internet; and some of the most simple, trim, easy to use cloth diapers.

I know you’re not expecting yet, but if you’d like, I’d be happy to send you a few diaper samples.

I look forward to your response.

I am not sure about this. I want to help the environment….I guess I would just have to see how they work before I judge.

I actually thought about using the mamapads….or making some..there are some great tutorials out there if you are crafty and feel like it…but I just haven’t…I think if I do finally get pregnant with our 3rd, I’ll make the switch b/c we’re going to use cloth diapers. If you need any cloth diaper sites, check out http://www.kellyscloset.com and http://www.theclothdiaperwhisperer.com/ I’m ordering from them once I do find out I’m pregnant…*fingers crossed for soon!* ;)
