How To Take Your First Family Photos

Chris and I had planned to come down to my parent’s home for the holiday, and we thought it would be a great time to take some pictures. We just thought that the suburban setting would provide the perfect backdrop for the kind of shots we wanted. Besides, Chris also needed some updated shots for the ministry website. We hadn’t had any pictures together since the wedding. In fact, we haven’t even received the wedding photos yet. The weather was perfect and we seized the opportunity.
We didn’t use a professional photographer; instead, one of our friends took the shots with our own professional grade camera. After a few practice shots, she soon turned this into a professional photo shoot. We had a great time, especially when Barack joined in on the fun, though it took some coaxing to get him out of the neighbor’s flower bed! We really enjoyed the photo shoot and the shots came out great. I want to share some tips on how to take your first family photos with your husband.
- YOUR FIRST SIX MONTHS: Take photos within the first six months of being married. Why? It’s easy to rely on your wedding photos as your “couple” pictures, but you want to begin documenting your life together as soon as the veil comes off. You will appreciate the less formal pictures down the road when putting your family albums together.
- KEEP IT CHEAP: If you have a decent camera, ask a friend to take the pictures. The camera should do the work for them. If your camera won’t do, hire a local photographer who will take the pictures for a flat fee. Many photographers will try to sell you a package, but you should negotiate just for the photographer’s time without the extras. Make sure that you get the digital copies so you can retouch and/or print them yourself as needed.
- THE SETTING: There is no need to go somewhere exotic; your backyard or park will do the trick. Take the pictures outdoors. The natural light and setting will keep the pictures from looking dated years from now. I would caution against taking the photos indoors as they can look dated even five years down the line. If you must take them indoors, de-clutter and neutralize the space as much as possible. Also, make sure the room has good natural light.
- CLOTHING AND STYLE: Wear clothes that complement your skin tones, but are not trendy. As great as that outfit looks today, it will make you look out of style within a short amount of time. Keep your makeup and hairstyle as natural as possible. This too will keep the pictures from looking dated, and give you the ability to use the pictures for a variety of applications.
- TYPES OF SHOTS: Make sure you get close-ups, poses, and candids (action shots). This will give your album variety and appeal.
- THE LOOK: Many women hate pictures because they assume they aren’t photogenic. That is a myth. Everyone is photogenic. You just need to have the right angles. If you’re like me, having a wide face and nose, then angle your face to the side and downward slightly. Practice in the mirror, but don’t overwork your angle or it will look too “posey” and fake. You want the natural, happy newlywed look, not the Vogue reject.
However you decide to take your newlywed photos, remember that you are building memories for your kids and grand kids to see. One of the greatest inheritance you can leave your family is your example. Knowing that mom and dad, grandma and grandpa built their life together in marriage will set an example for them to follow. If you come from a family where divorce or single parenthood is the norm, these photos can be a great way to exemplify the power of a godly marriage. It also can be an encouragement to you and your husband when you have difficult times. Seeing your lives together in happier times can strengthen you to strive towards being that happy and in-love once again.
